With the surge of super hero movies from Marvel and DC since 2008, comic books and comic book culture have made a comeback. One such graphic novel, due in part to Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaption, was Watchmen. The only graphic novel to make TIME’s top 100 novels, this telling of an alternate history is filled with masked heroes, mystery, and a very cool neo-noire aesthetic.
The piece critiques the superhero genre in interesting ways, and has so much detail you’ll start to believe the world could be real. The character interactions are satisfying, and individual character profiles show you just what kind of person truly wants to dawn a mask and become a vigilante.
