I bet you never knew you wanted a Jazz Space Western. Maybe you still don’t want that, but it’s here! Cowboy Bebop, an anime that ran in the late 90s, is still one of the most talked about series to come from Japan. And what’s not to like? It’s sci-fi, fast-paced jazz music scores the adventures, and it’s even pretty funny.
Upon debut, Cowboy Bebop received accolades and now has already received the role of “classic.” Here’s a quick synopsis:
The twenty-six episodes (“sessions”) of the series are set in the year 2071, and follow the lives of a bounty hunter crew traveling in their spaceship called the Bebop. Although it covers a wide range of genres throughout its run, Cowboy Bebop draws most heavily from science fiction, western and noir films, and its most recurring thematic focal points include adult existential ennui, loneliness and the difficulties of trying to escape one’s past.
Possibly the two biggest draws of the show are that it avoids the anime tropes of super-powers and school-children being the heroes. Below is a trailer. You should also watch the intro to get a feel for the style and here the awesome theme song.
